Autumn is here and the weather is changing. In my stomping grounds of the Imperial Valley, the population almost doubles with the arrival of countless snowbirds who choose to winter in the mild southern California desert climate, away from their much colder habitat. For those of you snowbirds who will be spending the winter away from home, here are three do-it-yourself projects that will provide the home you leave behind with a lived-in look.
Install a Lighting Control System – You can’t beat the simplicity of using X10 powerline products in your home. Use the lighting control kit, XPPSK05, which consists of a timer and two plug-in appliance moodules. You can easily add more modules, if required. A great feature of the timer is that it can be programmed with up to 64 events. For example, you can control a single X10 address and have 32 ON and 32 OFF times. Or, you can spread the events over eight addresses, with each address having four ON and four OFF times. The ability to have redundant ON and OFF times adds reliability to the lighting system. Hitting an X10 device with consecutive commands spaced one minute apart goes a long way in making sure the device responds properly. Another feature of the timer is the security mode, which randomly varies the set time by plus or minus 30 minutes, thereby mixing things up a bit with when your lights turn on and off.
Install a Security System – The LNDVSKIT51 is a complete, wireless system that’s ready to go right out of the box. The kit includes a console with a built-in siren, a two-way voice board, two door/window transmitters, one motion detector, one Keyfob transmitter, the RJ31X security phone jack interface, and a back-up battery. You can add up to 24 wireless sensors. The system can used with or without a monitoring service. If, however, you wish to have the system call you, additional hardware is required in the form of a voice dialer, SEE920A.
Install a Remote-Controlled Thermostat – I’ve blogged about this product before but it’s worth mentioning again. The Sensaphone system has the ability to control a set-back thermostat and receive inputs from various sensors. If the temperature limit is exceeded or if a sensor is activated, the system automatically calls you, or anyone on the programmed callout list, alerting you of the condition. Read all about the Sensaphone here, Remote Control and Monitoring.
So, snowbirds, drive safe, enjoy your stay and our mild weather, and sleep well knowing that the home you left behind is protected and in good hands.
